Introducing AI and Machine Learning to the Workforce

Written by Alexis Efstathiou on 31, May 2017

Are you ready to rewrite the rules when it comes to your workforce? Technology is advancing at an unparalleled rate. Individuals are relatively quick to adapt to ongoing innovations, but organisations move at a slower pace. Many still retain industrial age structures and practices that are long outdated.
Today, a new set of digital business and working skills are needed. Chief Learning Officers (CLOs) need to be prepared for the important role technology will play in a successful learning strategy. However, mistakes can be costly; learning must come first. According to Deloitte’s 2016 “Global Human Capital Trends” report, 84 percent of executives said learning is an important (40 percent) or very important (44 percent) issue. Yet many learning leaders struggle with outdated platforms and static learning approaches, suggesting a need for better technology-enabled learning solutions.
One of the key trends in learning technology today is to offer constant access to small bits of content that meet learner’s just-in-time needs. This is especially true among millennial employees, who now make up more than half of the workforce and have grown up getting immediate answers to any question by asking Siri or watching YouTube videos. This has created a different learning environment from 10 years ago, when all of the information an employee needed came from the learning and development department.
Are we ready for Artificial Intelligence in the workforce?
Looking into the future or for some companies the early stages, AI is making its way into the workforce. The idea of CLOs being able to predict personalised learning needs or deliver targeted learning content based on work tasks before employees need it would be revolutionary for employee development. Daniel McCoy will be speaking at this year’s Chief Learning Officer, Fall Forum on October 24th- 26th in Boston on ‘The CLO’s guide to Artificial Intelligence, Virtual training that gives results’. This talk will explore how to get the C-Suite and workplace on board with Artificial intelligence, working with IT and the CIO to create a cohesive strategy and getting results with AI, how to measure and get maximum impact.

Here are a few ways AI will impact the future of learning:
• A virtual learning assistant, or learning bot, for every employee.
• AI and Machine Learning could drive clear and specific business value; consider experimenting with one or two high-impact scenarios.
• Key performance indicators to drive adoption. AI’s growth will bring new criteria for success including an organization’s collaboration capabilities and information sharing culture.
People management is a key focus for a lot of CLOs and the impact of AI maybe the secret sauce to help employee development and growth, AI and machine learning could allow employees to worry less about bias and performance management processes and more about progressing toward their goals, while providing managers with the hard data needed to support the workforce.
Chief Learning Officer Forum, Fall, taking place on October 24th – 26th will be highlighting some of the biggest opportunities and strategies for CLOs to be ahead of the wave in the digital era and ensure they are making the right choices for their business needs. With an exclusive Focus day looking at the digital CLO and the tools needed to stay ahead of the wave in the digital era.
