The reality of data and analytics in the region is that most companies are only now beginning to awaken to the power of analytics and the importance of good quality data.
At Corinium, we're focused on developing data and analytics leaders across the globe. Having successfully developed Chief Data Officer and Chief Analytics Officer Forums in the US, UK/Europe, Australia and (most recently) South Africa, we now turn our attention to the UAE.
My research to date - with companies such as Du, Emirates, IFFCO and SAS - shows that there is still a long way to go until companies in the UAE begin employing CDOs and CAOs. Right now, they're focused on the foundations of data, data governance and analytics.
There is a definite focus on analytics specifically in the region but with the understanding that good analytics is only possible with good data.
Many of the data and analytics leaders I have spoken to have essential support and sponsorship from their executive teams to improve how data is managed within their organisations. They've realised that becoming a data-driven enterprise with good analytical skills will improve performance and drive a competitive advantage.

A Need for Information
What has become apparent is that there is a strong need for information in the UAE on how companies can become data-centric and especially, how they can centralise the data and analytics function.
There is no shortage of advice and information from the vendor community - which is important - but there is a distinct lack of conversation between the practitioners themselves. And while events on Big Data and IoT have their place, they're not getting to the foundational skills companies need.
The CDO Forum Evolves
Based on the current phase the market is, we've made the decision to evolve our service offering. Some might view this as a backward step from our core work of delivering C-level events. But, for those who attend, it's a step forward - the first step of a long journey.
The Data & Analytics Leaders Forum UAE - October 2016.
Our first event in the Middle East will work with data and analytics leaders right from the start as they develop their roadmaps towards data-driven enterprises.
Through case studies from local businesses and insightful sessions from international CDOs and CAOs, participants will gain an understanding of what it takes to begin their transformational journey.
Alongside the main conference we will host:
- The Data Foundations Masterclass - an intensive day of discussion on how to build a data strategy, develop an enterprise architecture, create a data management framework and implement strong data governance
- The CDO & CAO Forum - this will be a high-level session featuring stories from global CDOs and CAOs. The session will be critical for other C-levels to attend so they can understand how these roles have developed overseas
All in all, the event is going to be a comprehensive look at all things data & analytics.
